A taste of home

When something is on your mind, sometimes the smallest and most seemingly meaningless things can remind you of whatever it is you are thinking about, it’s almost as if your brain wants to remember something. In my case, just the smell of garlic rice cooking is enough to remind me of the daing na bangus that my mother used to make us for breakfast all the time. The recollections of those breakfasts are enough to distract me almost immediately from whatever I could be doing at the time. And while I loved the taste of daing na bangus then and still do now, it is not the food itself that I find myself missing. The memories of the food allow me to focus on the feeling of family that came with such a breakfast. As a young professional I had to move away from my hometown for work and it is not as if I regret that decision. It's just that sometimes, I miss home and want to think back on those happy memories.
Living away from home is confusing since it's both very easy and at the same time quite hard to adjust to the new circumstances. You could go one week without having any trouble cooking, cleaning, or doing the laundry and find yourself the following week seemingly unable to get any kind of housework done. It's at these times that I like to get some daing na bangus and fry it up to eat to remind myself of home. Both to comfort myself about my current situation living away from my family and to remind myself that my family will still be at home when I find time to visit.
